Cristina Grasseni is professor of anthropology at Leiden University.

Her lecture introduces alternative economy networks as a sociocultural arena that allows comparison across Europe and beyond, to think critically about notions such as belonging, participation, active citizenship and civic values. In particular, the lecture will focus on scenarios of alternative procurement of food and specifically collective food procurement, drawing on ongoing research for the ERC Consolidator project “Food citizens? Collective food procurement in European cities: solidarity and diversity, skills and scale”.

In this case, the anthropological focus lies on food as a mediator of sociocultural relations, not only a commodity or nutrient. How we procure and share food is thus central to cultural understandings of citizenship and of societal norms.
